The third annual staging of the Shaggy and Friends concert on the Lawns of Jamaica House in Kingston registered huge success with patrons who came to support the initiative to help children under the theme One Ticket= One Life… I dare you.
With internationally renowned musician Lauryn Hill as the headline act, thousands flocked to venue to experience this talented musician sing her hits that made us all fell in love with her when she started out with the Fugees.
However, her performance was flat and saw minimal highlights throughout her set that patrons could appreciate. Rather than doing some of her singles as is, she remixed several of her songs that did not go down well with the audience. She however, managed to salvage what was left of her performance with singles such as That Thing and Turn Your Lights Down Low.
Recording artiste Eve, while not originally billed to perform, came and wooed the crowd with some of her hits that many have come to know and love. Her performance was well received by the audience who rocked to each note she sang.
The Jamaican acts never disappointed the music lovers as they saved the excellent production organized to assist the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
Mr. Vegas, Wayne Marshal and Assassin represented dancehall well. Vegas even showcased his versatility when he ventured into some of his gospel reggae hits that was went well with the patrons.
Beres Hammond executed his brief yet effective set with shear brilliance and had the audience engaged in a sing-along as he unleashed his musical catalogue for the audience to enjoy. The legendary Half Pint and Cocoa Tea showed that veteran reggae artiste can still move the crowd who willfully obliged in their musical masterpiece.
Maxi Priest, Romain Virgo, Gyption, Tami Chynn and I-Octane’s performances resonated well with fans as they gave an excellent representation of their catalogue and delivery. Shaggy played host for the night but he too could not miss out on the performance as he did the ever so popular It Wasn’t Me along with the recent hit Sugar Cane.
The Bustamante Hospital for Children represents a tremendous opportunity to help preserve the lives of children. The hospital is not just the only paediatric hospital the English speaking Caribbean, but in Jamaica, it’s the only paediatric hospital which offers specialized health services for children.
Shaggy saw the need to use to draw attention to the great need for specialized equipments needed to save lives and that need gave birth to the Shaggy and Friends Concert to raise funds through entertainment.
Although Shaggy has made significant contributions to the hospital; The donation of 2 specialized ventilators, an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine (used to monitor brain activity in epileptics and seizure sufferers as well as those young patients with brain tumors) a table top sterilizing machine, funds to upgrade of the medical oxygen system and other numerous donations over the years; the Bustamante Hospital for Children is still in desperate need of assistance
